Description

This is a portrait for my boss's wife Kathy, her dad passed away a couple months ago and she regretted never have a picture of them together. So this is a birthday gift from her husband.

This is a very nice work and a very thoughtful gesture on your part and I'm sure it will always be a cherished gift for your bosses wife. It speaks of the happy moments they no doubt shared together.

Portraits are always a difficult thing to present as the most critical people are often those within the portrait itself. I'm sure she'll still appreciate the gesture very much and there are just a few minor artistic considerations that she'll undoubtedly overlook.

The first, and most obvious is that Kathy's arm disappears in the background when her shoulder and forearm should appear over her father's back and behind his head. Her hands are beautifully done and I personally consider that the most difficult part of the drawing. Their faces are also very well rendered, but I think you could concentrate on them better by raising the contrast and making his suit coat darker and perhaps adding a slight glint to his glasses.

The only other problem I can see is Kathy's neck. It seems to be disappearing underneath her right lapel I think the easiest fix for that would be to erase the dark portion at the edge of the lapel and use one of those smooth and subtle gradients that you're so good at to blend her neck into her upper chest.

In all, I would say this is a wonderful portrait and a very heartfelt gift that will be enjoyed for years by the family of your boss.
